Every living system oscillates between building and clearing. Modern life has kept one phase and nearly eliminated the other — not through negligence but because the clearing phase, unlike everything else in the health economy, cannot be sold. What accumulates in its absence is not a mystery. It has a name, a mechanism, and a shape that matches the epidemic we call chronic disease.
However we measure success dictates everything that follows, because we organize around the measure. For ninety years that measure has been GDP: a war-planning instrument, adopted without deliberation, that counts destruction as production and has no concept of enough. Output was always for something. We have simply never measured whether it delivers it.
What we call 'science' is the continuation of natural philosophy under a different name. What we call 'philosophy' is what remained after science claimed the empirical. The word applies to both, creating the illusion of continuity where there is rupture. This essay traces what happened when philosophy fractured—what each side inherited, what was lost in the split, and where genuine philosophical inquiry actually lives now.
